Both cold and warm water provide hydration, but they affect your body differently depending on the situation.

Cold water is ideal for cooling down after exercise or in hot weather. When you exercise, your body temperature rises and cold water helps lower your core temperature, reducing exhaustion and allowing you to work out longer. Cold water also encourages you to drink more voluntarily, which is helpful when you’re sweating and losing fluids. Additionally, cold water may improve exercise performance and support better rehydration in hot environments.

Warm or hot water can provide relief from congestion, colds, and nasal issues by helping clear blocked sinuses. The steam from warm water helps you breathe more easily, whereas cold water can thicken nasal mucus and worsen congestion. Warm water may also help with digestion and can be soothing for a sore throat.

Cold water may trigger headaches in some people, particularly those with migraine, and can worsen symptoms in people with achalasia (a food pipe disorder). Extremely hot water should be avoided, as it can damage your mouth, throat, and tooth enamel, and may increase esophageal cancer risk with long-term use.

There is no significant difference in how efficiently your body absorbs water based on temperature. The most important factor is drinking enough water consistently throughout the day. Choose based on your situation: cold water when you need to cool down or stay hydrated during exercise, and warm water when managing congestion or seeking comfort.
